More Than a Mouse Story

Portland has amazing things going on all the time that are free or almost free for families. One of the free activities happens to be free movies at many of the theatres in town for small kids. Jenna and I ventured off to one of those last week. It was her first movie in a theatre and we had a great time.

We watched The Tale of Despereaux. It apparently came out in 2008 and is based on some kids books but I knew none of that before going. Anyway, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that movie since. Ridiculous I know but it had amazing Biblical themes and some lines in it that just keep replaying in my mind. The main character is a small mouse who won’t conform to the mouse world and is banished. He strives to be a mouse of truth, integrity, and courage no matter the cost. At one point he is even sent to the center of an arena to be fed to a cat and stood on a cross platform. Does that remind you of any stories you have previously heard or read? It has the theme of forgiveness throughout and at one point he says, “some people say that grief is the strongest human emotion but it’s really forgiveness.” Now that’s one to ponder isn’t it? I think that a lot of it went over Jenna’s head but I love that it was great for parents too and begins a great conversation between kids and parents.

So have any of you seen it? What did you think about it? I recommend it, even if you don’t have kids.

  1. I borrowed it from my mom just this past weekend! Haven’t watched yet. I’ll keep an eye out for Biblical themes now. Hurray for family-friendly Portland!
