Fight for Date Night

August 12, 2010 — 2 Comments

I don’t mean that you should have a fight on date night. I mean you should fight to always have a date night in your marriage. Matt and I have always made it a priority to have date night at least twice a month. They don’t have to be expensive or over the top. And since becoming parents we have found ourselves shopping at Target for more date nights than I would like to admit.

It’s been much harder since we’ve been here though because there has been so much going on and we don’t have a long list of sitters like we did a few months ago.

So last night we had set up with some friends to watch Jenna and we’re going to watch their little girl for them to have a date night. It works well. Even though we had that set up we found ourselves saying “is it really worth it? We’re so tired today. We have to go drop her off and then wake her up after she’s gone to bed.” On and on we went. But we decided to go and it was SO worth it. There will always be an excuse to not do it. There is always something in life going on. But here are a few reasons that you should always value it:

  • Our spouse (behind God) should be first, so I guess that would be second 🙂
  • We need to work at and invest in each other so we don’t drift apart. We need face to face connection and uninterrupted conversation.
  • We have to model to our children that we value our marriage. If we don’t, who will?
  • It’s fun!

We had such a great time talking and just hanging out. We like to use this silly book called Coffee Dates for Couples to spur on fun conversation and it always leads to deeper discussions as well. We felt refreshed, reconnected (not that we felt disconnected, it just made us more connected), and excited for our next date night.

So have you been on a date with your spouse lately? What’s the best date you’ve ever been on? I love ideas.

  1. Yay for date night!! Our favorite night of the week. On our anniversary, believe it or not, we played Dr. Mario (the 2-player competitive version) on the Wii for HOURS- we had so much fun. I will have to check out that book- after 8 years we could use some good conversation starters. 🙂

  2. Best one so far that jumps to mind: big Blake and I went to the mall with $10 and bought things for each other, then met up again after 30 minutes to exchange little gifts. I have no idea what either of us got, but it was fun, different, and made us think about what the other would like.

Otherwise, I’m a foodie, so anything with really stellar eats is a winner in my book!
